To know Etna, the highest volcano in Europe that, with its volcanic activity, has created lava spires having particular shapes, surrounded by a variegated vegetation typical of Etna area such as the perfumed brooms, birches, sessile oak and chestnut woods. Along the way it is possible to see golden eagles, sparrowhawks, buzzards, barn owls, foxes and weasels. We dind't specify any meals nor accomodation, because they up to the clients' request. (hotels, farm-houses, rural accomodations, alpine huts). Six day itinerary, 85 km. Route, 6/7 km. Per day, average difficulty.
It is a very peculiar land, the only one which, together with Iceland, has natural caves formed during the volcanic eruption. There are more then two hundred caves among which the "Three Levels Cave", "The Raspberries Cave", "The Ice Cave".
1st day: Alcantara
Arrival at Catania airport. Visit to the Alcantara Gorges which, according to a legend, are Volcano's work: the god punished a man because he had piled up a heap of grain robbing his own blind bother; he burnt down the wheat with a flash of fire, changing the heap into a volcano. As a matter of fact, the Gorges are the result of a lava flow coming from mount Mojo, a very big flow which rapidly invaded the river bed, while the cooling, due to the presence of water, was more gradual.
From 2nd to 5th day: Etna, all the sides with climb to the craters and caves.
Discovering the highest active volcano in Europe, where a variegated flora grows, such as the Etna birch, which is typical of the volcano, the broom, unmistakable feature of this place, within the frame of a surely charming lunar landscape with unusual forms. The itinerary consists in going on foot round the volcano along easy forest tracks and lanes, staying overnight in holiday farms, refuges and very simple foresters ' camps. The route winds up along one of the most ancient lane of mount Etna which passes through the Rock's Water Deep Valley. Here there is a spring originating from the southern face of the Valley of the Bove. You will continue with Mount de Fiore and Mount Palestra, a various route which alternates stretches of pinewood and lunar scenery of recent volcanic dents, until you arrive to the top of Mount Soro, where there is a little refuge in which it is possible to stay overnight. You will conclude with the high traverse, from south to north, and the climb to the craters so that you can admire them close up, passing through the 1983 lava flow, observing houses and trees buried by lava and perceive unforgettable sounds and colors. At last, the Ice Cave is particularly interesting; inside it, you will visit a glacier, which is the only itinerary of this kind in the Mediterranean area
6th day:
